Stapedotomy

Stapedotomy is a minute and delicate operation done on one the tiny bone (Stapes) of the middle ear ossicular chain. Abnormal bone deposition (otosclerosis) affecting the stapes can lead to conductive hearing loss. The surgical goal is restoration of the transmission mechanism by bypassing the resistance of the fixed stapes footplate. The stapes arch is removed, and either a perforation or a partial to complete removal of the footplate is performed. A prosthetic implant (piston) is employed to connect the incus to the oval window (inner ear). Stapedotomy is basically performed to help conduct sound to the inner ear.
